Wake up call: this is the life I'm living... Life we are living in

If it ain't broke, don't fix it

That's what people say, and it works. However, I think some parts of life (world) are broken, and they need to be fixed.

If only I were the only person to live in this world, fixing it would be easy. I know myself inside out.
If only there were only me and my house mates, it makes the matter a little bit challenging; but I've been living with them for almost 3 years, so I, myself, still can fix it.
If only there were only me, my house mates, and the people that I know living in this world, I think I still can tell them, "hey, let's do something about this".
If I were at the centre, I think I can make it all right. I just simply work on my circle of influence.

But life is full of the others, people that I haven't met, people who have direct connection with my friends, people who have different concepts than I do, who can exercise their influence to the people in my circle of influence.

I see differences as something unique. When a nation, or even two people want to be together, the differences shouldn't be a dividing factor. The question that needs to be answered is that, "are you looking at the same vision as I am?"

Perhaps, living a childhood as minority has made me value differences more than anything else. As a kid, the urge to be popular is always there. You don't want to stand out because of being different; you just want to stand out because you're like the others and you wear the coolest shoes as advertised on TV. But I was a minority. Jackpot. I wouldn't be the same as others, and I couldn't afford to buy a quick and expensive racing car like the other kids from my neighbourhood. That goes all the way till the university. I'm a living-and-still-breathing witness of an Indonesian society which is very proud to have 5 religions and thousands of races; a country that mentions God in its 5 principles of a nation; a country that thinks it's civilized because religion is the base of everything, and its multi-racial society can live together peacefully. A country that thinks it can value differences.

The fact is, it needs a long way to value differences and move forward together. Life needs a long way.

Comments:
I like your writing here. There are sadness and frustration, but I see a hint of hope as well :)

Well, sometimes people are too busy looking at the differences they inherit rather than the ones that really define them as human. Maybe because people likes easy way out. We humans always feel the need to attach ourselves onto something, and the easiest would be what can seen from outside. This is a very sad situation we're living in. That's why nowadays I tend to say "to hell with what others think". Forgive me for being too rude :)
